Gen Z and ecology

La Gen Z et l’écologie

The environment is one of Gen Z 's top concerns. It is defined as a generation born in digital communications between 1997 and 2010. Concerned about the future of our planet, a real awareness was born. Commonly referred to as Gen Z , addicted to digital, digital, video games, social networks and
fast-fashion, today they are the actors of tomorrow .

All concerned

Young people between the ages of 15 and 18 are more sensitive and more concerned about the environment . In 2011, already 79 % of young people surveyed believed that global warming was due to human actions, compared to 68 % of the population on average (ADEME survey) .
This generation is much more up to date than some people think. Constantly solicited by their phones, Gen Z is notified in real time.

Soon all vegans ?

18-24 year olds are five times more likely to have adopted a vegetarian diet than 35-64 year olds.
A study conducted by Diplomeo had revealed that one in four young French people thinks of becoming a vegetarian one day. A state of mind directly linked with the desire to protect the environment and limit animal suffering.

Micromobility in vogue

What is micromobility ? It is about the whole of the modes of individual displacements light, portable and practical. It operates over short or medium distances most often in urban areas.

In one year (from 2019 to 2020), the bicycle use index has increased by 60% (according to www.paris.fr ) while the use of scooters has exploded with a 90% increase in trips between September 2021 and August 2022 (according to www.lebonbon.fr) . With the arrival in force of Generation Z , sustainable mobility has become all the more important.
The behavior of the French in terms of mobility varies from one generation to another. The youngest are naturally turning to new means of transport and 100% digital services.
Nearly half of Generation Z young people use public transport , particularly to get to school, run errands, etc.
Electric scooters and bicycles are very popular, especially for short trips.
Bicycles and scooters are faster than cars in town because the cycle paths and the absence of traffic jams allow free and optimal movement . Saving time and money!
Members of Gen Z are the biggest users of micromobility means (bicycles and scooters) and represent 44% of all users.

GenZ youth are now college students, high school students and mostly
in higher education. Which means, among other things, having a carrier
more or less thin currency.
We then ask the question : purchase or subscription ?
- For daily use of a rented electric scooter,
owning one can pay for itself in just about 5 or 6 months. (From radins.com)
- For little travel, electric bike rental is more profitable. On the other hand, for a regular practice and in the long term, the purchase of an electric bicycle is more advantageous. (From Cyclic.info)

It would therefore be better to invest. Nevertheless, young people turn more easily to bicycle and scooter rental and self-service services because it is more practical. : no problem of storage and theft.

Contradictions ?

Despite Gen Z 's desire to make ecology part of their daily lives, lifestyle habits such as the excessive use of digital, online fast-fashion orders have a disastrous carbon footprint. Very committed, how far are they willing to go?
